Setting up a PPV Competitive Analysis Environment

Windows

Download the VMware player and install it with the default options. Reboot if necessary.
Start VMware player and install Windows XP inside it. Windows XP CD image (ISO) can be found here (for this image use CDKey: DQHMH-7WD6Q-93TGC-KWWFC-6Q6V8). For more specific instructions follow the guide here (don’t worry about the ‘Unity’ command or seamless integration instructions near the bottom of this document).
Set the screen resolution to at least 1024×768 to simulate a typical users setup.
Download and install Avast Antivirus (FREE).
Install Windows XP Service Pack 3. Download it here.
Download and install the OverPlayVPN client on the Windows XP installation running inside VMware Player. For more specific instructions watch the video here. This is assuming you are using OverPlay as your VPN provider (suggested).
Run Windows Update (on Windows XP) and install (Express) all available the updates. You can also turn on Automatic Updates to ensure all updates are installed.
Download and install Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Install Adobe Flash Player. Note: You’ll need to install this twice; once while running Internet Explorer and once while running Chrome or Firefox.
Install GameVance downloadable games (TrafficVance) by signing up for the service using a disposable email address (you will have to confirm it) and installing one of their Tournament (not Online) games. Disregard the “Repair System Registry” icon now installed on the desktop.
Install HotBar browser toolbar (Lead Impact) by clicking on one of the videos or games.
Install Babelfish translator (DirectCPV).

NOTE: Never enter your real email or cell phone number if prompted. Adware is now installed in this virtual environment and you will be marketed to if you enter this information.

Now when you want to look at competitors PPV ads while surfing around the web. Open VMware Player, start Windows XP, run the OverPlay VPN client and connect to a VPN endpoint in the country in which you want to snoop. You’ll need the credentials for OverPlay in order to complete this series of events.
